My name is Mikayla Harper and I am the owner of Mindful Island Counseling. I am credentialed as both a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Autism Specialist. I earned a Bachelors Degree from the College of Charleston in Communication Studies with a minor in Psychology before going on to complete my Masters Degree in Psychology : Clinical Counseling from The Citadel Graduate School. I specialize in the treatment of kids, teens, and young adults. I love everything about working with young people from shaping elementary school behavioral issues and the unique challenges of middle school to adjusting to life in young adulthood. I have significant experience working with individuals struggling from Anxiety Disorders, Major Depression, Behavioral problems, Trauma, and Adjustment to life changes and stressors. I also have a passion in working with individuals on the Autism Spectrum. I have significant training and experience working with individuals with ASD and co-occurring conditions. I also work with parents who are seeking guidance in navigating a new diagnosis of ASD or daily life challenges of learning to support your neurodivergent child. I aim to support the neuro-diverse community by highlighting my clients' strengths and increasing awareness, acceptance, and appreciation.

I believe that the counseling experience should be uniquely crafted to meet the needs of each individual client while still applying the best evidence based treatment protocols. To do this I use an integrated approach that is rooted in cognitive behavioral therapy and incorporates mindfulness, person centered interventions, and a sensory friendly environment. When working with young children, I also utilize play and creative techniques to keep them engaged and comfortable. Additionally, being housed in the same building as a well known and respected Pediatrician allows me the opportunity to consult and collaborate on cases when appropriate to ensure a truly integrated approach to mental health care. Most importantly, In my office there is no discrimination, no judgement, it's safe to be you here.
At times, life's stressors can make it feel like you are at best treading water, and at worst on the verge of drowning. My goal for treatment is to help you find solid ground, breathe freely, and accomplish the goals you have for yourself or your family.
As a mother, I know there is nothing worse than seeing your child hurt and knowing you
At times, life's stressors can make it feel like you are at best treading water, and at worst on the verge of drowning. My goal for treatment is to help you find solid ground, breathe freely, and accomplish the goals you have for yourself or your family.
As a mother, I know there is nothing worse than seeing your child hurt and knowing you cannot take that pain away; except of course being that child in need. To Parents, I promise to care for your children in a safe therapeutic environment to support their growth and highlight their strengths.
To Teen/ Young Adult Clients, the cornerstone of counseling and psychotherapy is confidentiality - I often call myself a "professional secret keeper".
I promise to keep all the secrets that have been holding you back, and to share all of my secrets to help you grow and move forward.
All are welcome, come as you are.
*There are certain limits of confidentiality required by law. These will all be outlined in client consent paperwork and discussed at our first session
